Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is a leading aerospace and defense company in India. With multiple operational locations, HAL required a robust and scalable networking solution to enhance connectivity, improve operational efficiency and ensure high availability of its IT infrastructure.
MRO-TEK was awarded the MPLS_VPN WAN Project for HAL. The project involved deploying a secure and scalable network across 21 locations to improve connectivity and operational efficiency. As an empaneled National System Integrator with BSNL, we have successfully executed multiple turnkey projects PAN India.

Challenge

Reliability and Redundancy – The existing network had limited redundancy, leading to risks of downtime.
Scalability – The network infrastructure needed to support future expansion and increasing data traffic.
Security – The system required enhanced security features to protect sensitive data.
High Availability – Ensuring uninterrupted operations in the data center (DC) and remote locations was a priority.
Cost Optimization – Reducing operational costs while maintaining high performance was necessary.

Solution Implemented

To address these challenges, a new MPLS-based network architecture was proposed with the following key components:

Network Architecture

Core Router : Juniper MX104 installed at the data center, ensuring high availability (HA) and handling high-speed data traffic.
Branch Routers : Juniper SRX300 deployed at remote locations for secure and reliable connectivity.
Protocols Used:
BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) for WAN routing to improve network control.
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) for intra-DC communication.
Redundancy : MPLS and point-to-point links were implemented for link redundancy, minimizing downtime risks.
Open Standard Protocols : Ensuring integration with third-party vendor equipment.
NMS : MRO-TEK Omni Eye NMS for pro-active monitoring of the network.

Implementation Phases

Phase 1

Installation and configuration of MX104 as the DC router with an STM and MPLS link.
Deployment of SRX300 at branch locations.
Establishing MPLS connectivity using BGP.
Conducting User Acceptance Testing (UAT) to validate the network setup.

Phase 2

Migration of all point-to-point links to BGP-enabled routers.
Configuration of STM interfaces on the DC router to publish network updates.
Network testing to ensure traffic load balancing and failover capabilities.
Integration of OSPF and BGP for optimal route advertisement and redundancy.

Results & Benefits

High Availability : Dual-router setup at the DC prevented single points of failure.
Enhanced Security : Advanced firewall features, IPS, anti-virus, and content filtering on SRX300 routers.
Improved Performance : Non-blocking performance, 40Gbps throughput, and QoS support.
Scalability : The network infrastructure now supports future expansions with Layer 2 & Layer 3 VPN.
Operational Efficiency : Simplified management using JUNOS OS, reducing the complexity and training costs.

Conclusion

The implementation of a highly available, secure and scalable network significantly enhanced HAL’s IT infrastructure. The deployment of MPLS, BGP and Juniper networking solutions ensured reliable and efficient operations, reducing downtime risks and optimizing performance for future growth.
