Implements BGP-4 and MP-BGP for our network operating system, under the Principal Engineer's guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement the BGP-4 protocol stack — FSM, message processing (OPEN/UPDATE/KEEPALIVE/NOTIFICATION), and the 13-step route decision process
- Implement MP-BGP extensions across address families (IPv4/IPv6, VPNv4/VPNv6, EVPN) and BGP attributes (AS_PATH, MED, LOCAL_PREF, communities)
- Implement route reflection, confederations, add-path, and graceful restart; integrate with RIB/FIB and the route policy framework
- Write and test C/C++ code, debug protocol issues with Wireshark/GDB/tcpdump, and profile for convergence performance
- Mentor 2-3 junior engineers, review their code, and collaborate with the Principal Engineer on design decisions
Requirements
- 3+ years of software development experience, with 2+ years in network protocol development (BGP, OSPF, IS-IS, or similar)
- Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking fundamentals and routing concepts
- Hands-on experience implementing or debugging network protocols in production environments
- Experience with the Linux networking stack and systems programming
Nice to Have
- Experience with open-source routing software (FRR, BIRD, GoBGP)
- Understanding of MP-BGP for VPN services (L3VPN, EVPN)
- Knowledge of BFD for fast failure detection
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
