Implements Interior Gateway Protocols (OSPF, IS-IS) for our network operating system, under the Principal Engineer's guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement the OSPF v2/v3 protocol stack — neighbor state machine, LSA processing, SPF algorithm, area support
- Implement the IS-IS protocol stack — adjacency formation, LSP generation/flooding, TLV encoding, route calculation
- Implement multi-area routing, route summarization, authentication, and graceful restart; integrate with RIB/FIB
- Write and test C/C++ code, debug protocol issues with Wireshark/GDB/tcpdump, and profile for performance
- Mentor 2-3 junior engineers, review their code, and collaborate with the Principal Engineer on design decisions
Requirements
- Strong understanding of TCP/IP networking fundamentals and routing concepts
- Hands-on experience implementing or debugging network protocols in production environments
- Experience with the Linux networking stack and systems programming
Nice to Have
- Experience in networking open-source projects
- Experience with OSPF-SR or IS-IS-SR extensions for Segment Routing
- Familiarity with network simulators (GNS3, Containerlab)
- Understanding of BFD (Bidirectional Forwarding Detection) for fast failure detection
- Knowledge of Python for test automation and tooling
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing
