The Challenge
The client needed 24×7 reliable WAN connectivity between its SCADA control room and remote power distribution and sub-station sites, for continuous transmission of critical RTU (Remote Terminal Unit) data. Requirements included redundant WAN connectivity across MPLS, ILL, and SIM/LTE links with automatic traffic switching on WAN-link failure — a conventional single-WAN architecture would have created a single point of failure for the SCADA network.
Our Solution
MRO‑TEK ran a Proof of Concept using the FALCON-SR-180 SD-WAN appliance in a hub-and-spoke architecture, connecting two branch locations to a central hub over multiple WAN links. MPLS was configured as the primary path, ILL as the secondary, and SIM/LTE as the tertiary backup, with link-quality monitoring on jitter, delay, and packet loss driving automatic failover and Active-Active/Active-Standby load balancing across links.
The Outcome
The SD-WAN POC successfully demonstrated resilient multi-WAN connectivity for the SCADA environment: traffic automatically shifted from MPLS to ILL and then to SIM/LTE on successive link failures, and reverted to the higher-priority path once restored. The FALCON-SR-180 devices operated on the production network for two months, validating continuous, resilient WAN connectivity for critical remote-site SCADA communication.
